Background
The Albemarle County School Division
depends on teacher leadership as it pursues excellence
in education. Each elementary school in the division
has a teacher designated for core content support in science. Their main job is to keep the various lines
of communication open so that teachers in their school
will have access to the latest information, training,
and resources.
The lead teacher model is employed in the
division's secondary schools. Each of our five middle
schools and our charter high school has a lead
teacher for science.
Each of the three comprehensive high
schools has a science department
chair.
In addition, each core content support
teacher (elementary), science lead teacher (middle), and
science department chair (high) will also serve as their
school's POC (Point of Contact) in the Building a Presence
for Science program sponsored by the National Science
Teachers Association, the Virginia Association of Science
Teachers, the Virginia Department of Education, and various
other state level organizations.
Just as it is important for teachers of
the same grade level and/or subject area to work together
to articulate and integrate curriculum, it is equally
important for teachers of different grade levels and subject
areas to review and adjust the development of curriculum
vertically (i.e. grades K-12). This is main focus of the Science Vertical Team.

The Chemical Hygiene Officers (CHOs)
are responsible for ensuring the proper handling and storage
of chemicals used for instructional purposes in our secondary
schools. They also develop and deliver training on laboratory
safety issues, help maintain the division's Chemical
Hygiene Plan (CHP), and serve on the division's Science Safety Committee.
